What made you decide to join Kool Smiles?
The company’s mission lines up perfectly with what I have come to realize is my own mission. Making it comfortable and easy to see the dentist is only part of what makes my heart happy. Increasing access to care and helping underserved communities is the other part. After my initial interviews with Kool Smiles, it just seemed like the perfect fit.
Do you have a memorable experience from visiting the dentist as a child?
I sucked my thumb until the 3rd grade. Because of this, I had a pretty good sized overbite. I got braces and had to wear head gear. I only wore it at night, but I remember crying and not wanting to wear it because of the pain and pressure it caused. I joined the Marines right out of high school, and had to have everything removed prior to boot camp. Best day of my life!
What’s a common misconception about dentistry that you would like to clarify?
That all dental work is painful. It is not, and I would love to prove it to the world, one patient at a time.
How do you plan to live out the Kool Smiles mission on this trip?
I plan on giving my all on this trip. I intend to provide triage, care, an ear to listen, and the healing human touch to every person who needs help.
What’s a final piece of advice you have for people trying to make a difference in the world of dentistry?
Do your best always – and love what you do!
