Why did you decide to become a dentist?

My father was a General Dentist and I admired the dental care that he provided for 48 years.

What made you choose Kool Smiles as your professional home?

I had many pediatric patients in my practice in Louisiana and loved being their dentist. I always reached out to educate school-age children in the local elementary schools, so I felt that Kool Smiles would be a good fit.

What type of practices did you work in prior to joining Kool Smiles?  What are the positives at Kool Smiles versus previous practice environments?

I owned a private practice in my home town for 33 years. I sold my practice in 2011 and worked at several practices in the New Orleans area before joining Kool Smiles in 2012. Two of the practices were private and one was modeled after Kool Smiles techniques.

One of the positives of working at Kool Smiles is that you stay busy with little down time. Another positive is getting to practice with like-minded individuals who have the best patient care as their main focus.  The fast-paced environment also challenges your time management skills.

What is a typical day like at Kool Smiles?

The day starts with a huddle led by our Clinical Team Leader (CTL) Charlotte, or our Office Manager (OM) Sharon, followed by balloon blowing to be ready for our early morning hygiene rush. Starting in 2012, I started making three different balloon animals to give to our hygiene and operative patients at the end of their treatment.  We now make balloon swords and they are “cavity fighting” swords. We (our other dentist, Dr. Downing and one of our hygienists, Shannon) do this every morning for the kids. The day is sprinkled by hygiene checks, restorative procedures and operative procedures. By the end of the day, it feels great knowing we have helped so many patients improve their smiles.

What do you love most about your job (both generally and working at Kool Smiles specifically)?

I love working in a family atmosphere with my 15 coworkers as we establish relationships with the patients and their families and as they show appreciation for the services we deliver. I also love the leadership and support shown to our dental team by our Area Dental Director, Dr. Park and our Managing Dental Director, Dr. Bryan.

How do you see your work at Kool Smiles making a difference in the community?

Working in the border town of Fort Smith, AR, we treat patients from both Arkansas and Oklahoma.  We see daily the distance that people have to travel to have accessibility to quality dental care. I like knowing that I am part of the dental access solution.

What would you tell dentists who are considering a career with Kool Smiles?

I would have them consider the benefits provided and the income potential available.
