What inspired you to pursue a career in the dental field?
I was inspired to pursue a career in dentistry because I saw that it was a wonderful opportunity to serve my community, impact lives and interact with people, all things that would allow me to have quality of life in a life-long career.
What made you decide to join Kool Smiles?
I decided to join Kool Smiles because of the company’s mission. The mission is to expand access to high-quality dental care for underserved communities. This mission is what I find to be one of my greatest responsibilities as a dentist.
What do you love most about working at Kool Smiles?
What I love most about working at Kool Smiles is the wonderful staff I get to collaborate with each day and their motivation to do the best for the patients. I also love the smiling faces of the patients, especially the children as I’ve seen them grow over the years.
What keeps you going? What is your motivational mantra?
The following quotes:
“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”—Mahatma Gandhi
“We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.”—Mother Teresa
What is the most valuable lesson you have learned so far in your career?
The best teacher is truly experience, so I’ve learned to not be afraid to ask questions or try new techniques.
Describe your experience as a dentist in one word?
Why did you decide to apply for this mission trip?
I decided to apply for this mission trip because I have a personal connection to Ghana. I am an immigrant to the United States from Ghana. The opportunity given through this mission trip to return to Ghana to serve my native land and my community as a dentist was exciting. I am passionate about being able to serve the underserved in my country through dentistry.
How do you plan to live out the Kool Smiles mission on your trip?
I plan to live out the Kool Smiles’ mission on my trip by educating the Ghanaians we will serve about oral health so that they can make long-term changes. I plan to provide high-quality dentistry in Ghana in order to give this underserved community an opportunity to improve and learn skills to advance their oral health.
What sort of impact do you hope to make among the communities you will be serving?
I hope to engage and motivate those we serve to actively improve their oral health and pass on the knowledge and skills we provide to family and friends.
What kinds of experiences do you hope to have on this trip? What do you hope to learn?
I expect an enjoyable and fun time in Ghana as always. I hope to meet wonderful people and eat delicious food. I hope to discover Ghana through a new lens as a dentist. I hope to learn how I can continue to contribute to my native land for years to come.
