Three doctors from Kool Smiles teamed up with the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s School of Dentistry (UMMC) to deliver free dental care during the UMMC Dental Mission Week. Drs. Cristie Rives, Evelyn Collier, and Erica Rose assisted a cohort of UMMC dental students in providing treatment and pain relief to nearly 800 people who otherwise would not have been able to access care. Kool Smiles further supported the program with a monetary contribution of $2,500.
Held in combination with Give Kids A Smile Day, UMMC Dental Mission Week is an opportunity for dentistry students to gain real world experience treating patients while giving back to the community. From February 6-10, doctors and dental students provided free dental exams, cleanings, tooth restorations, and extractions to undeserved adults and children.
The event, which served children and adults alike, was a huge success. Underserved residents in the community were able to get the care they needed, while the next generation of dental health providers gained a valuable educational opportunity through hands-on experience in the field.
