Dental school and degree: Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry (PA), DMD
Current position: Associate Dentist
Number of years working with Kool Smiles: 6 months
Why did you decide to become a dentist? My parents always wanted one of their two children to be in the medical profession. We have a lot of doctors in the family, and I wanted to do something different and go in my own direction while still being able to give back to society with my skills and education. I had the opportunity to explore dentistry and I couldn’t see a better fit for me – interacting with people, applying scientific knowledge, and using artistic skills to restore beautiful smiles!
What made you choose Kool Smiles as your professional home? I’ve always been passionate about helping people. While I was in dental school I had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people who never thought they would have access to quality dental care. The kind of satisfaction I got from helping those in need with my skills was irreplaceable. When I looked in to the kind of work Kool Smiles does, I was very excited! I would have the opportunity to help those in need and to educate the younger members of society and instill healthy habits that they would carry forward. It made complete sense to choose Kool Smiles!
Why did you choose a DSO-affiliated dental practice over private practice? As a new dentist I wanted to start off with an office that was structured and organized and was able to provide me with the kind of support I would need after graduation.
What is a typical day like at Kool Smiles? We have a busy office here, in Fort Wayne! Typically we jump right in to our day after our quick morning huddle. My patients range from 1 to 60 years old! I do exams, fillings, extractions, crowns – you name it! I enjoy working on little kids just as much as adults, and I try to make their experience at Kool Smiles as good as possible, all things considered! After appointments the kids get to pick out toys from our treasure chest, and I enjoy that part the most! Between exams and operative procedures, we don’t get much down time, but when we do, I like to touch base with and get to know my staff better.
What do you love most about your job (both generally and working at Kool Smiles specifically)? I love the humanitarian aspect of it. I absolutely love interacting with people and getting to know them too. We get some pretty amazing patients at Kool Smiles, and the fact that I get to work with kids most of the time is amazing. The things some of my younger patients say just make my day! Kids don’t always understand how what we are doing will help them, but they are definitely resilient and interesting young people!
How do you see your work at Kool Smiles making a difference in the community?
From my perspective, fixing a bad tooth is the end point. If I can educate and instill good oral hygiene habits in these young children, then they will carry it forward and teach their kids, and it will be a cycle that continues on and on. If I can educate the parents, peers, and caretakers, then I have armed the entire community with enough knowledge to practice healthy habits. Sometimes it’s just as important to provide access to the knowledge as it is about providing access to care.
